The idea of recycling cat litter has long been a way of life for many people in the city of Jerusalem, where cats can make up a substantial portion of the population.
But in recent years, it has come under fire from some residents who believe that it has become a way to get rid of the litter left behind from the old cat houses.
Keren Regev, who lives in the neighbourhood of Seder and runs a recycling business, said that her business had become a big source of income for her family.
“I started using cat litter for recycling two years ago, and the business has gone up by 50% every year,” Regec told Al Jazeera.
“There are only a few places left in Jerusalem that do this now.
People come to us and tell us that we should take it back.”
The problem with cat litter is that it can contain heavy metals, such as lead, arsenic, mercury and other toxins, and is also highly toxic to animals.
“We have to put the cat litter away in a plastic bag and then throw it out,” Rekev told Al-Jazeera.
She added that her company does not want to be responsible for any animal damage caused by its products, but it has been unable to obtain the necessary permits to do so.
“The last year has been very tough for us.
The city council gave us no time to take care of the cat waste,” Reben said.
In addition, the recycling business has been facing legal challenges from animal rights activists who claim that it was not properly regulated and that it is responsible for the spread of the diseases that are carried by cats.’
The problem is getting worse’In addition to the environmental damage caused to animals, Regef said that it also has a negative effect on the people who live in the neighborhood, because it is “the problem is coming to them”.
“The problem has gotten worse,” she said.
“It’s not like it used to be.
But now, the city council decides that it will only take care for the animals who have been adopted, which is why they don’t want to take the cat back.”
Regev said that while she had no control over how the cat is treated, she does have control over the litter she collects.
“People are not allowed to throw the litter away, but we have to dispose of the cats, which means the litter is treated differently, but that doesn’t mean it is not toxic,” she told Al -Jazeera on Wednesday.
Regec said that she would prefer to have the litter placed in the trash rather than having to throw it away, so that it could be recycled.
“If you put it in the garbage, it will be recycled,” she added.
In recent years Regechv said she has also been trying to change the culture around the business.
“When the cat comes back to the litter box, it is like a little toy that is just thrown away,” she explained.
“This is a good thing.
If you put something in the litterbox, it’s not the end of the world.
If someone has a big problem with it, they can go to the animal shelter and ask for it.”
